Illustrative Mathematics
This project involved designing math textbooks for schools across the United States.
It’s one of the most intricate and multifaceted projects I’ve worked on. Spanning all school grades from kindergarten to high school, it includes multiple units for each grade, with both teacher-facing and student-facing content. Each school level—primary, middle, and high school—has its own distinct color coding, but all elements must fit seamlessly within a unified design system. The work required meticulous alignment of templates, paragraph styles, and math symbols to maintain consistency across thousands of pages.
Adding to the complexity, the project involved collaboration across multiple teams in Glasgow, outsourced contributors, and stakeholders in the United States, while I managed my part remotely from Helsinki. It’s a highly detailed and collaborative process that demands precision, adaptability, and constant attention to coherence.
An orchestra playing across 10 time zones
Design team of over 40 people: working closely with editors and designers at Imagine Learning Studio in Glasgow, stakeholders in Arisona, external contractors from Haremi.
K-12: over 200 books
Math School books for all levels: primary, middle, and high school. Each grade includes about 9 units, each consists of Student Workbook and Teacher Guide, plus Language adaptations.
